Vineyard worker/tractor driver

The staff working in the House vineyards, whether salaried employees, casual workers or employed by independent service suppliers, are deployed to undertake the annual cycle of vineyard tasks:

  1. Sustainable use of pesticides
  2. Soil maintenance: erosion prevention, fertilising, weed control
  3. Pruning
  4. Tying-up
  5. Crown suckering
  6. Lifting
  7. Trellising
  8. Topping
  9. Harvesting
  10. Pre-pruning and shredding

Occasional works such as:

  • Topping
  • Leaf thinning
  • Pesticide treatment

A vineyard worker must be qualified to drive a straddle tractor and have an understanding of environmental issues, which are an ongoing priority.
Part-time vineyard workers support the full-time workforce to cover peak seasonal demands, often working on a piece-work basis.

Vineyard workers sometimes work in teams, sometimes individually on one particular task. When working alone they enjoy an independence that is greatly appreciated by most because it suits the two-way relationship they like to maintain with nature in the course of their work.
